Creating Simple Web Banners and Buttons

To create a new image:

Step one:

Click the New document icon

Step two:

If desired, type a name for the image, and set the width and height.

To match the width and height of the new image to that of any open image, choose a filename from the bottom section of the Windows menu.

Step three:

Set the resolution and mode. For the web, set the resolution to 72 pixels per inch and set the mode to RGB

Step four:

Select an option for the contents of the bottommost layer of the image:

White to create a white background.

Background Color to fill the background with the current background color.

Transparent to make the first layer transparent, with no color values. The resulting document will not have a background layer.

Step five:

Click OK.

Fill the background in with a color:

Pick a color for your button by clicking on the color icon.  Clicking the front square activates the foreground color-picker and clicking on the back square activates the background color-picker.

The color-picker menu will appear.  Select the color for your button by clicking a color and clicking OK

From the Select menu, choose All

From the Edit menu, choose Fill

Select either Background or Foreground color based on your selection in step 1.

You should now have a colored rectangle

Add text to your button/banner:

Step one:

Select the horizontal type tool or the vertical type tool.

Step two:

Make sure that the Create a text layer button in the options bar is selected.

Step three:

Click in the image to set an insertion point for the type. The small line through the I-beam marks the position of the type baseline. For horizontal type, the baseline marks the line on which the type rests; for vertical type, the baseline marks the center axis of the type characters.

Step four:

Select additional type options in the options bar.

Step five:

Enter the characters you want. Press Enter on the main keyboard (Windows) or Return (Mac OS) to begin a new line.

Step six: Commit the type layer by clicking on the check mark icon in the toolbar.

The type you entered appears in a new type layer.
Note: Clicking the Cancel button discards the type layer.
