Click the New document icon

If desired, type a name for the image, and set the width and height.
To
match the width and height of the new image to that of any open
image, choose a filename from the bottom section of the Windows
menu.

Set the resolution and mode. For the web, set the resolution to 72 pixels per
inch and set the mode to RGB
|
|

Select an option for the contents of the bottommost layer of the image:
White to create a white background.
Background Color to fill the background with the current background
color.
Transparent to make the first layer transparent, with no color values. The
resulting document will not have a background layer.

Click OK.

Fill the
background in with a color:

Pick a color
for your button by clicking on the color
icon. Clicking the front square
activates the foreground color-picker and
clicking on the back square activates the
background color-picker.

The color-picker menu will appear.
Select the color for your button by clicking
a color and clicking OK

From the
Select menu, choose All

From the
Edit menu, choose Fill

|

 |
Select
either Background or Foreground color based
on your selection in step 1.

You should
now have a colored rectangle

Add text to
your button/banner:

Select the horizontal type tool or the
vertical type tool.

|
|

Make sure that the Create a text layer
button in the options bar is
selected.

Click in the image to set an insertion point for the type. The small
line through the I-beam marks the position of the type baseline. For
horizontal type, the baseline marks the line on which the type rests; for
vertical type, the baseline marks the center axis of the type characters.

Select additional type options in the options bar.

Enter the characters you want. Press Enter on the main keyboard
(Windows) or Return (Mac OS) to begin a new line.

Commit the type layer by clicking on
the check mark icon in the toolbar.

 |
The type you entered appears in a new type layer. |
| |

Note: Clicking the Cancel button discards the type layer.
